It's official, WHISTLER, PEMBERTON and SQUAMISH, B.C. are exempt from the federal foreign buyer ban starting January 1, 2023! Areas outside the Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) and Census Agglomeration (CA) would be exempt from the prohibition.
Definition of a CMA: A census metropolitan area (CMA) or a census agglomeration (CA) is formed by one or more adjacent municipalities centred on a population centre (known as the core). A CMA must have a total population of at least 100,000, based on data from the current Census of Population Program, of which 50,000 or more must live in the core based on adjusted data from the previous Census of Population Program.
As I had hoped and predicted from the moment this legislation was passed, Whistler is officially exempt from the Canada wide foreign buyer ban!
Whistler, B.C. is Canada's first resort municipality. Whistler consists of property owners from all over the world. Retroactively removing a foreign buyer's rights in a resort made no sense. Smart move from the Canadian government.
Happy New Year to you and your families! 2023 is headed in the right direction.
